What a good segment intention does
A strong Segment Intending example makes the method’s real job visible. Here, that job is to use natural transitions between activities as cues for one small behavioural intention that lasts only for the next segment. Copy the structure, not the exact sentence; the point is to understand why an example is useful.
Commute example
At the start of the commute, set “arrive with the first task already chosen.” The intention ends when you reach work.
Meeting example
Before joining, set “listen for the constraint before arguing for the solution.” This is specific enough to guide behaviour.
Workout example
At the start, set “complete the planned session at a sustainable pace.” The intention belongs to that segment only.
The “perfect segment” problem
A weak segment intention is so broad—“everything goes perfectly”—that it gives no behavioural cue and makes normal variation look like failure.
Too many segments
An overcomplicated system creates intentions for every ten minutes of the day, producing more monitoring than usefulness. Natural transitions are enough.
Repair with one behaviour
Repair the weak version by removing anything Segment Intending cannot control and adding one practical function: a decision, sentence, behavioural cue, review point or action. A repaired example usually feels less dramatic and more usable.
Review at the transition
After using an example, look for direct evidence relevant to the method. Whether transitions become clearer and behaviour more deliberate is more informative than signs or emotional intensity. If the example does not improve the thing the method is designed to help, change the example rather than adding more ritual.
Quality check
Ask four questions: Is the wording clear? Does it fit the mechanics of Segment Intending? Does it respect facts and other people’s autonomy? Can I name what I will do or review after the exercise? If yes, the example is probably specific enough.
A full transition-based cue case
Before a ninety-minute work block, use “For this segment I will finish the outline before opening messages.” The segment begins at a natural transition, has one controllable behaviour and ends at a real boundary. Review once when the block ends.
Why this example is diagnostic
The example tells you what Segment Intending is for and what it is not for. It contains a practical bridge, a real-world test and a stopping point. That makes it more useful than an emotionally dramatic example that cannot change a decision.
A second quality test
If you are setting intentions every few minutes, you have lost the lightweight advantage. Reserve the method for transitions where a deliberate cue genuinely changes behaviour. Then ask whether the example still respects facts, safety and other people’s autonomy. If not, rewrite the example around your own behaviour and evidence.
Three natural segment boundaries
Work block: finish the outline before messages. Meeting: listen for the constraint before recommending. Workout: complete the planned warm-up before judging energy. These are natural transitions with one controllable behaviour. Good examples end when the segment ends; they do not require constant mental maintenance.
What not to copy from examples
Copy the decision logic of Segment Intending, not the exact life details. Change the goal, wording and action to fit your situation. If an example encourages denial of facts, control of another person, sleep loss or avoidance of a real task, it is a poor example even if it sounds inspirational.
One more Segment Intending example test
Imagine changing the goal in Segment Intending Examples: Good, Weak and Overcomplicated to a completely different area of life. The example should still preserve the same method mechanics while the wording, action and evidence change. That portability is a quality check: it shows you understand Segment Intending rather than memorising a sentence. If the example only works because of a special symbol, exact person or lucky timing rule, simplify it until the practical function is obvious.
Bottom line
Good Segment Intending examples are specific enough to guide a session and ordinary enough to survive contact with reality. Do not treat an intention as a guarantee about traffic, colleagues, customers or any other factor outside your control. Prefer examples you can understand, use and stop.
